Case study

Last summer, local pediatricians reported 25 cases of severe diarrhea in infants less than three years old. All children lived in the same neighborhood and played in the same park which just happened to have a wading pool. Cultures of stool specimens from the children revealed a gram negative bacillus that gave the following negative results: oxidase, lactose, urease, motility and hydrogen sulfide production. However, the TSI tube reaction was K/A.
a. What is the most probable organism. You will have to look at the biochemicals closely to identify the organism.
b. How was it transmitted among the children?
c. What could officials do to limit the infections of other children?
